Maggie Bao

Designer

From her Platinum A’ Design Award for her work on The Hex, a computationally generated kite conceived with teammates from an experimental studio at the Melbourne School of Design, to multi-factorial investigations in wood as a construction material with her Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD) team in the UC Berkeley Department of Architecture, Maggie has established herself as a promising innovator in architectural practice. She joins ABA with creative design and research skills enhanced by an aptitude for coding and technology that strives to push the limits of architectural thinking – without losing sight of the need to create human, environmentally conscientious solutions. Crucially, she brings an inquisitive mind to her work, confirming the observation by inspiring designer Thomas Heatherwick that “Often the most important moment in the design process is figuring out what the right question is.”

ROW HOUSE DESIGN CHALLENGE

To celebrate the firm's 40th anniversary, staff were challenged to share their imagination and design thinking by creating a row house concept. Here is Maggie's.

Statement:

The façade design was inspired by my cats’ favorite scratcher/couch, pictured above. They love engaging with it in various ways—lying on it, sitting atop it, or using it as a headrest. This façade is envisioned as both a sanctuary and playground for stray cats as well as my own. In select areas, glass revolving cat doors connect the interior and exterior, allowing the cats to move freely between the two spaces. There are no doors for humans on this façade—it's exclusively for cats.
